I have always been captivated by the play of light refraction, and I wanted to explore this idea by integrating a cannelé (fluted) glass concept into a watch design. What better foundation than the iconic Cartier Tank? A model with countless iterations, the Tank is perfect for reinterpretation and innovation.
In this concept, the sapphire crystal is intricately carved diagonally on its lower surface, creating a series of stripes that distort and refract light in a distinctive, retro-inspired way. This technique is applied to the central rectangle of the watch, leaving the iconic chemin de fer design along the dial edge untouched, ensuring the classic design remains intact.
To further tie the design to Cartier’s heritage, the top crown and the vintage Cartier monogram are inspired by the brand’s archives, adding a nostalgic touch. These elements contrast beautifully with the contemporary technology required to craft such a unique sapphire crystal.
